Can anyone truly be the best at anything?

This post is about how and why humans always strive to be the best. Many people believe in the saying that practice makes perfect but that statement is contradicted by the fact that nobody is perfect. Well I believe that in order to truly be the best at something one must start early.

An example of what I mean in order to clarify are the Spartans in ancient Greece. They were a true fighting nation everything they had and did revolved around fighting and war and they were undisputedly the best in their time. In order for one to be the best at something they have to be trained from birth. If one lets say wanted to be the best swordsman or the best driver they would have to clear their minds and have only the thing they want to be best at as their thought. That’s why a child who knows nothing has the potential to do and be anything he/she pleases.

If a child was to be trained from birth to fight like the Spartans he would be the best because he would know nothing else but to fight. Or if a child was trained from birth to drive and only brought around cars their entire lives and that was all they knew how to do then they would be the best drivers. This theory can equally be applied for good as to a child being trained in the art of science from birth will only know aspects of science and although he/she may not know other common information he/she would greatly excel past anyone other in the field of science. Another example of this theory is in the movie Unleashed with Jet Li. Li plays the role of a man that since childhood has been trained and knows only martial arts and is treated like a dog. His character in that movie is the best fighter because that is all he knows and he cannot fail and will not fail because if one fails at the only thing they know than they know nothing.

Also there is another movie like this where an evil man kidnapps children and trains them only in the art of killing and secludes them from the rest of the outside world and those children turn into flawless killing machines. These are examples of how this theory can be applied but people have mostly applied it from fighting and evil and violent means when it can also be used for some good. Like I believe that people can be trained from birth to do good like train in the area of medicine from birth so that person can become the best in their field and possibly help the world.

Also Plato believed a form of this theory in that all people were either meant to be leaders, workers or soliders and that one it was determined which of the three a person would be they would be school and taught from a young age for an extented period of time in only the area that they were put in. Like the soliders would only be taught to fight and defend, the workers would only be taught to work in specified fields and the rulers would only learn how to rule and in turn become the greatest rulers since that is the only thing they knew how to do.

I believe that this theory is very possible and could be applied for some good but the one great question is who is to determine who will do what and who will become what? I am welcome to any comment, questions or concerns about this topic.

One Response to “Can anyone truly be the best at anything?”

  1. “Also Plato believed a form of this theory in that all people were either meant to be leaders, workers or soliders”

Yes, yes he did. Plato believed in the good for the city-state and believed in a form of aristocracy that would rule. But like you said, who is going to determine “who will do what and who will become what.” That is where the flaw and corruption of this view on society comes up.

I thought of people in history, who were breed to do something from the day of their birth. The best example that came to mind was Beethoven. His drunk, abusive father wanted him to be a child prodigy like Mozart was. While Beethoven did become a great musician, few will deny that Mozart was naturally more talented. Beethoven was worked to the ground by his father to become a fraction better, but his counterpart had it all come very easily to him. So while Beethoven was breed a musician and become a great one, who was no necesarily the best there ever was. There are talents everyone has, but without a doubt some are just simply better than others.

Beethoven’s will over skill story is an inspiration to me.
